It was a warm day on April 15, 2013. A new league had formed, with a draft of epic proportions sending players this way and that. But on this particular day, friendly exhibition games were being played to get players and coaches...and the rules for that matter...better acquainted with the new league.
This particular game, between the Hyrule Swords and the Oshkosh Pilots, had aces Felix Hernandez and David Price decimating the lineups in front of them. Heck, it's been a long winter. It's just not fair to the batters who haven't seen a pitch in a while.
But then, it happened...Going into the bottom of the seventh with the score still tied 0-0, Juan Pierre managed to run out an infield single to become one of the few Pilots to get on base. But with 2 outs, and Joey Votto up to bat, Pierre made a mistake to run on the dual platinum glove winner Yadier Molina. After a tough call at 2B, Pierre was deemed out, and the sides began changing...all except Votto that is...
When Asdrubal Cabrera came out, he noticed Votto hadn't moved a muscle. It seemed Joey wanted to finish what he started...he wanted his at-bat! Everyone began looking around at each other, and a circus ensued. No one was manning first base! Before the Pilot's coach could get out there, Price half-heartedly threw a pitch. Some chuckles began going out, yet Votto smoked it right to where he would have been playing. Going all the way to the wall and to the laughter of his team mates, he stretched a double out of it causing some of the first real trouble to Price all game.
After a brief discussion with the new league umps...the combination of the weirdness of the situation, and the inexperienced umps gave way to one of the oddest calls ever heard..."Play On!"
What no one at the time knew, however, was that after a Cabrera grounder, Molina drove in Votto which ended up being the winning run of the game...for the opposing team!
When Oshkosh Pilot's GM Chuck Schaller was later asked for comment, Chuck remarked,
Bottom of Inning 7
Jason Castro flied out to left
Juan Pierre grounded an infield single to second
J.J. Hardy struck out
Juan Pierre was caught stealing second
Top of Inning 8
Joey Votto lined a double to right
Asdrubal Cabrera grounded out to third, Joey Votto to third
Yadier Molina flied a double to left, Joey Votto scores
Ichiro Suzuki lined out to left
Jordan Pacheco struck out
Box Score

"I see that it was tied in the 8th. (great pitching duel between King and Price) and my own player was the game winning run. Our fanbase is taking this one very hard."
